Windbreaks...

Wind will blow up plumes of snow
And bugle notes across
Where earth lies locked in boreal gaol,
And like a burglar enter, making fast retreat
With heat that comforts, northern-homes in winter.

But God gave man a brain to think,
Of ways to brace from that which rapes
And steals away, what his fires hold;
So, he plants out rows of sentinels,
Appoints them house defenders, calls
Them guardians, or windbreaks.
*****************************************

In a moments rest between wood splits,
I saw them coming, small berserkers
Size of ants, suspenended in a chilly blast,
Goaded by whips and spurs of its breath
To battle me...and my brave row of trees.

The first atomic soldiers hit
And caused the line to tremble, shake
Which bent them from their crest to knees,
Then like a bow with arrow freed,
The wooden soldiers stood up straight;
And laid to waste the second round,
Of wind and snow, and driven sleet.

The attack was on,
Headlong charged the cold draftees
And even though...

The point-men fell, still others came,
Onward raged the countless, crystal soldiers
Urged by winds that blew like satan's clarion,
Sounding evil notes, that ordered
All to back the first barrage...To charge!

Encouraged thus, the trillions
Staged a bloodless, wailing battle;
But the regiment of trees stood ground
And braced, against the siege with limbs
Held up like pikes, and lances
Stopping all that touched, and watched
Them fall to find their earth-graves
'mongst the leaves that fell in autumn.

The wind blew strong then, different calls
And all the sackers left, paid heed the orders
Cried out by their colonels-captains
Riding close behind on steeds of tempest
Shouting out to all still holding ground;

"Regroup ,brave lads, lets find a different way around"

With hedgetrees as mine
I do so understand...
albeit they are not the
most handsome of trees,
they break the snow,
cattle, and more...

So enjoyed this, Sir!

Will you whisper my name again?

LOL, 'and they all went marching, down to the woods...boom boom boom'
(couldn't resist )

I liked the imagery of those sentinels, those magnificent windbreakers. In coastal areas of California, after 1890 some planted eucalyptus trees as windbreaks. Now of course, we know how invasive they can be, how we sacrificed many native species in our ignorance. LOL, I know this may sound a bit off the subject to some, but this write triggered several thoughts for me, only one of which is understanding that our penchant for 'protection' often backfires.

The midwest does need its windbreaks...I remember seeing remote ranches in Wyoming, not a natural tree in sight, having bands of "sentinels" planted all around them..
Thank you for enjoying...

The library is a rare, distinct place
Thank you

Yes, it gave up and had to find another way around the house....

Glad you really liked it...

I am well aware of the exotic invasion of native habitat...look at the dandelion and goldenrod,  two introduced pests...We do have to take caution when planting non native species, especially in mass. Most of the windbreaks planted here are native hemlock and hard or soft maple, but Penn State still tells people to plant exotics..."boom, boom,boom......-)

Thanks for loving it.....

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.

I literally had to get up from my chair to go and put on a sweater! Truly! With all those cold winds I was feeling, I was getting chilled to the marrow of my bones!

Excellent write!

You've got that right, Lady Sunshine. An excellent read, even better the second time around.
Poetry is a windbreak of sorts.

Thank you, poet friends..

This is a poem for the whole winter season, in actuality...The first snowfall had dissapeared for about a week, and now the windbreak stands guard again, holdng its own against the snow army.

Your comments are cherished, and as you all know are inspiring...
