When I grow up...

...I want to be a librarian
and lose myself
behind horned rimmed glasses
and stacks of periodicals.
I want to lock the doors
and close out the world;
to study from the masters themselves.
I want to eat lunch with Shakespeare
and Tolstoy and have tea
with Browning and Frost
as each night Kipling lulls
me to sleep with his tales.
I want to dream
the adventures found
among the pages
and sleep on mounds
of books hoping
to absorb just a fraction
of the knowledge held within.
I want to study history
through the eyes of those
who witnessed its passing;
spilling ink into words
on fine parchment paper
so that lost blood
was not wasted.
I want to love
as deep as the poets
whose verses resound
between guilded covers that sit
under layers of dust
high upon the shelves.
I want to laugh, to cry, to read
until my eyes grow weary
and the child in me
once more believes
there’s a whole new world
just beyond the looking glass.

I am nothing special...and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me,this has always been enough.~N.S

When I grow up...
I want to be able to write something even half as wonderful as this piece!

Thank the heavens for the written word - I too could lose myself in their haven -

Enjoyed this -

i found it kinda sad how this note of cynicism pulls the reader back to reality.

HootieGal~
Well ... you'd be good at anything you tried~
No doubt in my mind about that !

Delaney plays Librarian a lot ... she likes the part about collecting a $fine$ for not bringing your book back on time~

Dear friends,
Thanks for your replies to this piece. It's no wonder several of you found it to be "sad in a way" as it was meant to be a reflective piece to express the longing for childish innocence again. Somewhere along the way we all grow up and in that growing we give up believing that dreams can come true, that there are other worlds out there, that great truth is found in fairy tales, that change can happen...guess I'm just longing for a bit of all of those things.
Hugs
Ruth

Love that ending...I loved the entire poem actually. It's headed for my library!

Having read this it made me really smile because I realized I did get to be just exactly what I wished for when I was young.  Beautiful work Ruth, and something tells me you are never going to grow up (or part of you that's for sure,) and that is wonderful!

Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it is the only thing.
