She held the monument to him in her hand
stolen from his dresser
a talisman
a symbol
a cufflink

Her longing for him
surpassed her pride
focused on the trophy
she sees nothing but
the piece of him

She gazes at the prize as though
it was truly him
standing there
wanting her
loving her

But he only noticed the cufflink missing
looking everywhere, he never suspected
that it was the god she worshipped
when she thought of him

She placed it on top of her dresser
a place of reverence
to pray to
to wish on
to hope for

He bought a new pair of cufflinks
discarded the lone pair-less one
and moved on

She lingeringly doted on her idol
incanting her love
never to him
only to the idol
silently

waiting

Compassion is the heart and integrity is the soul of excellence.

Very captivating write!

We give importance to different things ...

There is such loneliness here.

Thank you for reading..inspiration for this came from stepping on a cufflink in the parking lot at work. I wondered who would have dropped it...and it evolved to this poem.

From a small happenstance in a parking lot ... to this wonderful poem. I really enjoyed this Sharon ... it's amazing how we can hang on to physical things in either the memory of something past, or even a wish to bring a dream or want to reality. An excellent write!

Best wishes,
/Kit
