I cannot help but wonder,
What the next few years may bring.
The past has taken all the songs,
This cowboy used to sing.

The dreams I used to ponder-
No longer come to mind-
And like the rolling tumbleweeds,
They've left me far behind.

My children are all adults-
My hair has turned to grey.
I left my youth and vigor,
Somewhere along the way.

The hopes I held for romance-
Have all dried up and died...
I find myself just wishing,
That time would end my ride.

I cannot help but wonder-
What lies beyond the veil?
and will I leave a memory?
Will someone tell my tale?

So when I close my eyes in death-
And I am buried deep,
Make sure there is a tree nearby,
To shade me as I sleep.

John, this is touching....

my mother wanted the same, and she rests under a giant oak tree.....one of the biggest in the cemetery

Hey cowboy!!
It's going to be a long long time before you take that long sleep under the tree.
You have far too many tales to tell us yet..
SO good to read you here today!
May we have more please?

Someday your body may be placed under that big old shade tree, but your spirit will always be riding in my mind. Enjoyed your poem very much.

Gunslinger... Very very enjoyable story. Thanks for the the thoughts.
A full life, children and grand children too carry on the tradition and a perfect resting place for all time and a few good country songs. What else could we ask for... Paul

For me, I want my ashes to be sprinkled along some magnificent stretch of beach that is kissed by the Pacific.
For you, is it an oak tree? a cottonwood?

To me this is sad but I am sure you have a major story to be shared and I think you will have a new story to share with a new person. I really do. The write was so good though.

Your cadence and rhyme flows beautifully from beginning to end, as always Gunslinger. I very much enjoyed your thoughts in this, well done!
