What then of Michael
Would he not want to lay his burden down
the way we sometimes do?

Has he never been tempted
to finally, lay his sword against the wall
and strip the mail shirt from under his robes?

Doesn't he tire of weeping for us?

I've never understood how Father Philip
found the heart to deal with those young men
who around me had made the same decisions I had
but had gotten caught and faced the ire
of local cops who themselves were tired
or paid to turn another cheek

His mail was never set aside
but was filled with written pleas for mercy
that young Johnny be set free or shown lenience

He was, after all, a good boy
And Michael had seen millions of them
from Cain and Abel
and onward, throughout the ages

All of them gravitating to the edge
separating the pasture from the abyss
to walk, arms akimbo, balancing along the rim

Then, fall blindly into the emerald of his wings
or screaming into dark and tormenting regret
for only the rarest could walk the length

When Father Philip died
   I wept
for the many who would not know his way
of seeing good in others without the weariness
I knew must stalk his nights
overtaking him in the middle of prayer
to the God he so believed
            was good

And he sees them too, the rare

I fell long ago from Grace
and turned my face
unable to live up to the good father's ways
  I learned to curse

The ones still walking

yet
       I hear wings

Excellent job, gentlemen. I don't remember seeing a duet from the two of you before, but it is certainly something we should all be graced with again...soon!

Lord Michael has a mighty tall order but he is forever en guarde.

You write as well together as you each do on your own. An impressive collaboration by two poetic titans!

take 2 masters of pen and verse...and we get poetic brilliance...
still waters run deep poet sirs...and you and this does indeed.
So glad I didnt miss this!!

Poetry is emotion put into measure.
The emotion comes by nature ...
but the measure is acquired by art.

well I'll be damned...(maybe literally)
but this is sheer poetic brilliance

nothing less, of course, is expected from the likes of two of my favorite masterful word artists

ahh, the wonder of that fluttering . . . this is just beautiful you guys . . . it reads like a fable . . . the moral being that we are all most human.

I am amazed.
