Full moon bleeds white
Into the black of night
Tree limbs in shadow
Thrust as upraised arms

Overhead . . .

       Waiting . . .

“come closer, my little pretty”

The breeze seems to whisper
As if the trees speak
In the still chill
Of October

Something brushes the leg

Quick . . .

       Unknown . . .

Chills run spine

Upon the fence--

The black cat silhouette

An omen
Of things to come

Breath shows cold
Misting upon air
And coat is pulled tighter

Hurried steps
Resonating
In the nothingness

And yet –

Eyes are felt upon flesh

Hungry . . .

         Devouring . . .

And flesh crawls

Fear seeps into the bones

      And now . . .

I am --

            Running

Keys fumble with lock

Door slams

Bolts turn

Slowly

The shaking subsides
And breathing returns to normal

The spirits are restless
This Halloween Night

Hi Susan. Great piece you have here. I have read a lot of good poetry wedded to the Halloween theme today. Yours deserves a bump back to the top of the page.
