Two dimes and a quarter,
all that I had.
No cigarettes or chewing gum,
feeling outright sad.

A cab won’t carry me,
my feet will have to do.
Even though I can see
holes in both  my shoes.

My life is filled with emptiness
from death and so much pain.
Causing me much unrest,
what’s there for me to gain.

The coffee shop closed the door
‘cause I can’t pay my way.
Their sneers I do deplore
what can a broke man say?

I broke the bottle yesterday
that held my soul inside.
How long can a drunk man stay
on this coaster ride?

I once was a man of God
who practiced what he preached.
Until one day when those tires
howled loudly and screeched.

A child of four was lying there,
no life inside his chest.
And from that time until now,
a jail was my bed rest.

For I can see those blank eyes
that stared into my soul.
And no God has heard my cries
as empty bottles  roll.

And if my heart could replace
that one I stole from them.
That gift would still not erase
those two eyes staring dim...

Two eyes....staring dim.

Oh, Barry!

Your words touched deep inside my heart.  So very sad was this wonderfully written piece.

Take care........Sue

Deep, painful writing. You told this story so realistically... I hurt for him in his sorrow. Amazing job, Barry.

I wonder who inspired this incredibly touching piece.
A man's misery so powerfully rendered.

I am fortunate that this illness/disease
has never been my nemisis.   But there
are tens of thousands,  millions who live
a life of chance every day...driving drunk,
challenging the odds...

If this causes one person to get help,  then
it is priceless poetry...For nothing can be
more valuable...

I felt this to the very core of me. A drunk driver cause the decapitation of my cousin and I am still haunted by it to this day.

My wasband is a policeman and he has also shown me unforgetable police photos of the carnage wrought by drunk drivers.

May your poem open the eyes of those whose eyes need to be opened!

A highly moving piece of writing, my friend!

Love & Light,
Linda

Ah Barry - this one weeps.  Not only for the sorrow of the death, but for the pain of the man.  Alcoholism is a wicked task master that demands slavery and demise - I have seen the effects in my own circle and the valiant struggles of some to overcome their dependancy.  What a mess it all causes for so many -

very poignant dear Sir-
