No Longer in Pursuit

You have won, yes
the victor, triumphant

were you an elephant, then
your trunk would rise in glorious
trumpeting

were you a lion, then,
your roar would echo the
savannah

as you are man, then
and not vain
nor even vainglorious
but appreciative

you only smile into the sun
and whistle at the wind
allowing only one to
know
the race had been in your favor

all along.
