      Suthern and I received a challenge recently,
      to write a poem as a role. The scene is,
      a couple late at night, at a back table in
      an anonymous bar, during World War 2.
      ....Here's the result, with my thanks to
      the lady for a beautiful evening....

        One Night Until Forever

I’ve come into the bar after
a long and tiring shift,
hoping that song and laughter
will give my spirits lift.

The shy smile upon your face
reveals a healing scar,
and in your eyes, I see a trace
of guilt for where you are.

            I don’t need a cigarette,
            and you don’t need a light,
            nothing from the kitchenette
            to hold us through the night.

            I used to love the beaches,
            but now I won't return
            where every phantom reaches
            and memories still burn.

You’re wondering why you were blessed
to walk away alive;
you feel a burning emptiness –
buddies did not survive.

            I have no expectation
            beyond what I can see;
            no time for contemplation
            of what may never be.

How I ache to ease your pain
if only for tonight.
If I don’t see you again
Loving still feels right.

            You have no inhibition
            for wine to wash away;
            and I don’t need permission
            for what I’m going to say.

Perhaps somehow a trace of peace
we’ll find in midst of hell;
any doubts are silenced, ceased
I submit to your spell.

            We won’t plan for tomorrow,
            but we can share today
            the joy we’ll steal or borrow
            from a world in disarray.

The bar seems to disappear
it’s you and I, alone.
A song is crooned, you lean near
as I emit a moan

My eyes seek answers from you
and though there’s not a sound
I know one thing to be true:
this is real love we’ve found

            Your eyes ask me a question
            I don’t dare answer now.
            “Yes” is my concession;
            somehow it is a vow.

            I closed my eyes to life there
            but my death wasn't due;
            carried from the strife there,
            I‘ve opened them to you.

Oh My Go....
the tears won't stop...

Is there a place where two can publish one poem?

Or is the moon pulling on my heartstrings?

A lovely blending of talent, creating such a bittersweet beauty....love the clever theme and  creative flashback to another time, putting the unique spin on the duet.
Me thinks this could be a series....yes?
Very cool poets Ruth & James!!

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine ...
I've been eating poetry.

My heartfelt thanks to all of you... your kind responses are so very much appreciated! *S*

Jamie... I don't know how you put up with my angsts and anxieties... but I'm so very grateful you did. *S* Working with you was an honor... you make my words look so good (though I still like yours better. LOL) Thank you, my friend... in spite of my fears, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. *S*

It was a pleasure, and in spite of our Suthern lady's modesty, an equal partnership....

Thank you, dear lady....and a special thank-you to the one who designed the challenge for us....who I won't name here because I don't have permission, but want to thank her anyway.

not done with this one yet...
nope nope noppers
such a unique take on the dueting idea...
so?
where the sequel?

Poetry is emotion put into measure.
The emotion comes by nature ...
but the measure is acquired by art.

Even though thoughts of the European front were in my mind as we wrote this, I hope everyone will indulge me for revisiting it today... on the anniversary of the day of infamy that led to the landings on those beaches.

For I cannot and would not want to forget all those lives of then... or all the ones that are being forever changed at this very moment.
