Wake, my children, the candy man calls
And I know you wish a sweet choc'late!
Wake, my children, the ice cream truck jing's
And it's such a sultry June evening!
Wake, my children, the carousel plays
And we'll laugh atop the three ponies!

Now sleep, my dears, your father comes home
And he shan't have kisses he's wanting.

There are two very distinct ways to look at this poem, Ken.  Had it been written by a female...who is either afraid of what the father will do to the children when he gets home, or she is exercising her control over the children to abuse him from their smiles, hugs and kisses...

or...from the man's viewpoint - the wife gets all the fun...and all he gets to see is sleeping heads...

either way, a very well-written poem.  Thank you for the ponder.
