A Note to Emily Dickenson

What sayest thou, of fruitful words
That bent thy laden tree?
Their prime of sweetness in your season
Dangling copiously

No hand outstretched to beg the fruit
No willful praise was flung
Until you left from heaven’s gates
A thirst upon their tongue

For unto death your words took life
And filled the printed page
But mine, though spun around the earth
Will not survive an age

What sayest thou to this my fruit,
That pales beneath your tree?
Would thou desirest succulence
To hang delectably?

Then send a muse on thy behalf
And let my laden tree
Drop ripened sweetness on my page
And I will sign for thee
