walking the surreal

It was a dark and stormy night
No, really it was, not just a cliché’
The clouds hushed the full moon’s light
Yet lightning bolts turned dark to day

Wind wailed in tantrum with stomp of foot
Trees cringed beneath its wrathful cry
Held to ground with determined root
Branches as arms, pleading unto sky

The rain then came in slicing rush
Turning earth to quick sand squish
Rivers as eels across ground did gush
And shadows lay heavy in sodden mist

And there, in stealth, a darkness crept
Hugging against lines of somber cover
Creeping, sneaking, to where she slept
Until by her side he then did hover

What innocence upon this bed did lie
What beauty and blush she did reveal
And what a fitting night upon which to die
And from her breath, a soul to steal

A crash, a boom, a thunderous jolt
Waking up the sleeping dead
Startled eyes of wee yearling colt
Beheld the draped and shadowed head

A scream, a cry, a terror felt
As bone stark smile she then beheld
It was death that in those eyes did dwell
A specter of certain doom and hell

His laughter rang louder than the wind
He thrust his hood from bare bone skull
And surely to damnation her soul he’d send
If she could not resist his fatal pull

Then song of ages past she did cite
Remembering of such a night she’d been told
Her words filled with magic and light of white
Passed down from shaman of long ago

The wind did heed the call of lore
The clouds did part so that moon did shine
And specter of Erebus who’d come before
Shrieked and shriveled back into brine

So you see my friend, this is a wary tale
Of what evil and darkness lurks upon the land
Remember your goodness and you cannot fail
To turn from lure of temptation’s hand

Susan, you really hit a vein of inspiration with this one -- vivid and flowing.  Stygian but redeemed...

Image spectacular with a rhythm and flow that added pleasure to the read.  Very well constructed, the rhyme didn't seem forced and the tale transitioned wonderfully.  Then good advice in the end.  Gold star for this one.

"I'll save ya Beany Boy"
he shouted as he hurried into the room
POW ZAP BAM

"DAMN, he retorted then
Beany Boy has hooters"

and the dark one just grinned
and nodded and they signed her
for a contract with SI swimsuits
