Grandfather

Toward the void spins cognizant thought,
‘tis a maelstrom to nowhere,
a black hole to insignificance.
There let me mourn,
let this wretchedness surge out as though the mer,
combers reverberating,
face-to-face with obdurate crags.
No man should be the entirety of grief,
nor should that pain be so all encompassing as to keep out all remembrance of light.
This hurt is too abundant;
I can not bear it.
Kal-El where are you?
Only a man of steel could stomach such agony unscathed.
Here on this parterre I fall my strength but humbuggery.
Like an ensanguined cur,
I gnaw at it,
doing no good.
Teeth cut,
ripping crimson strips in flesh,
“Out!” I scream, “out.”
The tears come unbidden,
chiseling crevices in cheeks,
and there in intensive care he lies,
heart pumping ever slower.
Grandfather…
