A dragon knew, a dragon flew
shadowed skies of moonless night.
A morsel for a dragon’s stew
beyond the view of demon’s flight

He soared and sailed across the land
in search a maiden pure and chaste.
It was his work, was what he planned
and nary a drop would come to waste.

An eye of green and gold and black
did scour the land both far and wide.
His claws were honed for his attack
and then he’d soar away and hide.

Then o’er the hill in valley dale
He saw the quarry he desired.
She walked to well with empty pail
The form of her his lust did fire

With flap of wing and puff of smoke
one focused eye and deadly aim
He dived through air in darkness cloaked
Intent upon this mark he’d claim

Then  quickly as a dragon’s sigh
Without warning of coming change
The maid transformed before his eye
a warrior princess did remain

She stood most bold, smooth blade in hand
Raven haired with snow white skin
Eyes that flashed with steely command
Confident this battle she’d win

“Come to me, thou wicked blight,
Fire and brimstone be your kin.
I shalt slay thee upon this night
And make new boots from dragon skin!”

He roared and fussed in anger’s rage
and pawed the air in pure disgust.
For she would grace a lofted cage
as he sat eyeing her with lust.

And from his lofted height of death
he soared toward her waiting blade
as fire and smoke gave way his breath
in his lunge toward this maid.

And to the earth the dragon fell
his curdling scream piercing the night..
For from her stance a sword was thrown
which found his heart...to end the fight.

They say the moon now smiles again
above the castle peak and wall.
Because a maiden of soft skin
remains in wait their cry and call.

My God, what beautiful writing, guys and an amazing tale, the raven haired beauty reminded of something Celtic, maybe Rhiannon . . . without the dragon *wink*

Ah Barry - this was great fun - and I like the ending   Do you think she got her boots?  I do -

Hugs you -     Susan
