New Years Eve 1997

It's just a breath before midnight
New Years Eve, 1997
I'm sitting in my puddle of sorrow
thinking of you
The night air swims about the room
wrapped around the radio waves
interrupting the storm in my head
as the wind tugs at the drapes
The teasing whisper of snow
reminding me of your cheek
pressed to mine
in the last winter sigh between us
The sun was late in the morning
and so were we
late to the life we promised we'd begin
last New Years
Lasting tears
for the wreck we found ourselves in
the shards of our smiles
strewn across the icey road
bleeding
needing to bleed
so I can remember how to feel
In the afterthought chatter
we lived inside in the night after
now it's coming to me
coming, falling back into me
what I felt
what I feel now
so real
Sinking in my special grey area
reserved in a world so cold
I wish I was a kid again
or I wish I was dead
I dunno, but it's less lonely either way
I figure without you is without you
but to be without me
that's quite a different story
but I've never been the giving up type
So likely I'll still be here
rotting in the January light
of a new pearl dawn
the colors sagging downstream
with me
to the ocean, to the blinding loneliness
I can get used to
if I got my brocheres and my {edit profanity}  together
but how likely is that?
Home is where the heart is
they all say
but I can't get back to you
not that it matters anyway
I'll probably self-destruct
and not give a {edit profanity} about you
eventually
sad but true
sad but you know how I can be
C'est la vie, I'm free
but doing time
for my eyes hurting for you
hurting from the glow of the moon
throwing light to my bed
in the last breath before midnight
New Years Eve, 1997
