In New Zealand Amongst the Ancient Trees

0 posted 2004-10-15 06:59 AM

Softly, the path
The gardener treads
within this place
of ancient trees.
Where forest canopy
high above is spread.
Herein is where
he has laid his dead.
This place, where
the remains of love,
friends and his children lay.
This be his place
of memory.

Today, the gardener
comes to lay the last,
and to make
a solitary farewell
to each of those
he leaves within.
For he knows
he will not tread
this path anymore.

Tomorrow, once again,
softly the path
he will tread, leaving
the ancient trees
to care for the dead.
His time is come
for the last journey
to begin.
One last planting
in a land not his own
remains to be
under taken.

Then the Gardener
shall return
to planting life
in the earth again.
