The Latest War

No one said life was easy,
If they did Ned was unaware.
To him the hardest part of living
was finding someone to care.
It was summertime in Hawaii,
it was always summertime,
the beaches were awash with bikini's
and wetsuits, the alley's full of
wino's drinking the cheapest wine.
Young surfer boys were riding waves
and trade winds, in hopes a surfer
girl they would snare, and right up
close to the lifeguard station Ned
was sitting in his worn out sun chair.
He came to this same location every
morning, where he would carefully set
up his chair, if you were to go there
at 10:30 you would always find him there.
Tomorrow would be different, but today
was exactly the same, tomorrow morning
he was going to Honolulu Airport,
and flying away in a jet plane.
For Ned had joined the Army, as his
friends had done before, they went
away to serve their country, and they
had lost their lives in the latest war.
Now some people might say at eighteen
he's foolish, that the same fate awaited
him, but he had lost his zest for living
upon the death of his favorite friends.
I don't pretend to have all the answers,
I can't say that war will ever go away,
I know that Ned felt great sadness when
his friends died, and he's felt nothing but
sorrow since the war took his friends away.

For whatever reason, Ned made his decision.
I know he’ll need and want our support.
A very poignant write.

Thanks, Melton

Thank you MGROVES, Lee J, scorpio, Enchantress and 2dalimit for the nice responses...MGROVES I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your nephew...2dalimit this is not a true story, but it is about the consistancy and the pain of war...there always seems to be a new one on the horizon...as many young men and women have done, I joined the military when I was eighteen and like you say, for whatever reason...some are extremely patriotic, some go following the footsteps of their fathers before them, some are only looking for a job, or for an education and suddenly they find themselves in the middle of a war...a heavy burden to be placed on a teenager, young men or women in there twenties, or upon any man or woman...James
