One tends to forgive
but if the act of forgiveness is not complete
there is no safe return to blissful states
and wound repairs are partial
as mental sores refuse to heal
rancor creeps in through the cracks
morbid vengeance like meats stacked on racks
cured for their perverse flavour
in the smoke rooms of long term memory
are picked for taste tests.
Calm may return to the battlefronts
but when one cannot or will not escape
an urge to criticize for its own pleasure
where can forgiveness begin?

A good subject for a poem...and not an easy thing for many to do...What is the right way?   Enjoyed this poem and the thought behind it.

Martin:
"morbid vengeance"...perfect depiction that makes the anger drool...

Forgiveness must begin with forgiving oneself...that is the most difficult step.

I'm keeping this one...

When we are truly, completely forgiving ourselves and others, peace is guaranteed.

Thank you for this significant, well written piece about forgiveness.

It begins in the heart ...

Very much on this Earth depends on forgiveness.

I don't have an answer to how, but I am doing my best by taking the initiative and keeping channels open...it's not at all costs though. There is such a thing as self-respect.

Jesus said: "Father forgive them, they don't know what they do" .... and also "forgive seventy times seven ..." (Matt. 18) .....it's about elevating the level of consciousness. We are all learning to love, sometimes we fail.
I think self-respect increases by being able to forgive others and ourselves.
My thoughts, dear poet friend.

many tend to look at forgiveness as something we do for the offender.  in truth, it is a gift we give to ourselves for the very reasons you have spoken, it heals our soul and brings us closure.  sometimes, we even must first forgive ourselves of our anger and vulnerability to be able to then move on and forgive other for the pain they've caused us.  much to chew on here - much truth spoken.

Margherita,
I think self-respect increases too by being able to forgive others and ourselves but we have the ability to decide on the its modality. That my opinion.
I'd like to see you apply what you've stated from the scripture and then write back on it's success. Don't know about you but I live in the real world, appreciate your take on the quote but it doesn't mix well with me.
