Along The Road To Winter

Now while the trees stand aghast
as their green dreams fade,
and so little to show for summer
except perhaps another ring
and a little wood inside.

Now while the sun still searches
for slopes it can warm,
the places of unmown grass
with leaf throws scattered
like afghans to hold it in.

Say we’ll be there,
loll careless again
if only for a moment,
savor those last wildflowers
before the days of no blooming.

I am spring’s child, and I am
gone all out of time now,
my steps too light for the weight of it.
I have no assurance and no place
here in this waning season:
see, I am green still, and I flower!

Say to me too, remind me
I’m the leaf that will not fade,
though it bites me now, bites hard.
I know the night frost cannot reach
our slope of everwarm.

But if you can, please tell me
even if it is not so, that I am more
and that this place is more
than the last pleasant turnout
along the road to winter.

You are on a roll tonight!  When I think I've read the ultimate, then you post another one of such quality!  It's so good to read your poetry again!  I love your imagery and gentle flow.

"But if you can, please tell me
even if it is not so, that I am more
and that this place is more
than the last pleasant turnout
along the road to winter."

Fall and winter have their own beauty, and soon it will be spring again, and you will be the same dear person, only more!

This tender plea deserves reassurance... with that promise being absolute truth, not simply pacifying words.

Absolutely beautiful work!!!
