Survivors

This day is warm as summertime
And yet the sounds are fall.
Birds in excited twitter come
To answer gathering call.

They've courted, built and nested
And now with families grown
They're thinking of their Southern homes
In hurry to be gone.

Hardier birds will take their place
Adaptable like I
To winter's cold and northwind's blow
As storms intensify.

We'll settle in our small abodes
Just glad to be alive
And know through rain or ice and snow
The rugged ones survive.
