(This is a very old piece but it seems appropriate to post it now.)

Once there was a mountain set apart from other lands
but as the sea lapped at the edges of its need
the wind whispered, called, and ordered it stand guard
in the center of a town inhabited by man.

How it longed for sleep and the mist of past
to shade it from the view placed before its eyes
and it hurt and it cried hot molten tears of fear
over its once green and fertile outer shield.

Like gigantic shears they cut through undergrowth,
in pain the mountain moaned and shivered in its bones,
and it watched and it saw its heart, its soul, its all,
erupt and flow in anguish towards the home of man.

Run!  And they ran, and they tripped and they fell,
they screamed and they cried at the approach of hell
but some stayed and prayed, some of them were saved,
and some began again from the beginning to the end.

Once it was a mountain, some rocks and leafy trees,
it never asked to be separated from the sea,
but now a volcano, feared, revered, by one and all
looks sad towards the sea and asks, “why me, why me”?

A volcano, a woman – see how they’re holding hands
and how they long to feel again the way it used to be
before the wrath of God overlaid the land
and took from the sea what was meant to always be.

A volcano, a woman – they gave their all and more
yet they live, they still live, in the silence of review
until the day of change makes them know they’ll live again!
