Let Me In (A Nocturnal Admission)

So I'm pretending I'm your boyfriend tonight
amid spirits and libations and blurry streetlights
and all my best friends leave me behind
so we're walking around town, arms entwined
hailing taxis, bailing bar scenes
leaning on our neon light dreams
with your head on my lap
and your hand on my back
we'll pretend it's still 1985
and sing to the Talking Heads way up high
everybody's looking at me
but can everybody see
what a night with you in Boston
can do to me, and I can be lost in
your personality, or is it the drinks
am I as far gone as I think
I ask permission to crash on your floor
watch you sleep, watch the light under the door
as it fades from yellow to grey
I'm getting mixed signals everyday
and mixed drinks every night
watching my chances flee out of sight
the blips on my radar disappearing
you walk in my work-in-progress fearing
of sleeping till the crack of noon
and circling 'round a cloudy moon
looking for what I pretend I need
but it's just want, it's just greed
to look into a pair of brown eyes
and see meaning in disguise
so quit your waitress life
and look after my strife
as I tell you of who I wanna be
let the vodka and tonic flow free
I'll promise you all of my attention
if I can steal some of your redemption
from breaking up with all those guys
breaking all your old ties
to sleeping around
and here, look what you have found
it's me, in all my pathetic glory
selling the rights to my story
to empty glasses at 2 a.m.
leave the bottle, let me in
to whatever you have left to offer me
shared dreams are not for free
but it's so late it's early, won't you let me in
it's so late it's hurting, won't you let me in
let me in
let me in
please let me win

You are the best at this style, Zach, and I always enjoy the spiraled thoughts that carry me down the blue page. This is one of my favorites so far.

very very strong, and yet that last line troubles me, reminding me of the all to often people I've known who would have rather won (been right) then acknowledging the feelings involved....

powerful and thought provoking

this is so flavorfully alive
it's like a tonic to a tired poet

Zach,
Very impressive. It feels very personal. Excellent write. Peace...

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
