I read a poem that made me think, then made me feel, then I had to step into a different pair of shoes and look from another's eyes - it came out rather simplistic, but I think it speaks volumes - at least to me . . .

Second Best

She is all that I am not
Yet she is not all that you need
And where then does that leave me?

You are all that I want
But I cannot have all
For she holds you still

Yet I settle
For some is better than none
Even if I die a little

s.a.t.

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

Tragic.  Beautiful writing with a tragic message.  Pinning all of you on someone who only appreciates some of you...tragic.  That is not love to me.  Your write is a prolific message of doomed love, in my opinion.  I could not expect my wife to love me if I held another in higher regard (God aside, of course).  Your poem, was short and sweet with a heck of a punch.  Poetry at its best.  Ashame some of the best poetry is inspired by tragic situations.

Simplistic.....not
What you have done here is what good poetry content does....taken a complicated subject and atomized it, and the real trick to that is to not lose meaning or intent, which also you have not..

Kevin and Ice - I appreciate your commnets, I am glad to know that it reads with intent -I too think it is soooo sad when one loves another in total, yet in return settles  knowing that she/he is not loved as such in return.  It hurts me, to think from that perspective -

Thanks again, I am pleased that my work has the potential to impact someone -

Yes - it echoes of maybe some love is better than letting it go, because you will always be there but at a sacrifice.

Only love to the extent of a drug would sustain it.

A reality write of what does happen.

Very powerful in it's impact and straight to the heart of the word.  I much enjoyed this piece and I do believe I also read the one that inspired this response from you.  I would say you responded quite well and your case of point to the highest of regards.  Well done

I could have written this....and with three fewer letters. I never did like that 19th letter very well anyway.

Oh, lordie... do I ever know this... looking longingly at someone who's looking longingly at someone else... wishing they'd just look our way. *S*  Settling is a slow death... but the alternative only speeds the process. *S*

LOL @ counting the alphabet... I did, too! *S* Only to argue... without "S" we'd never have "yes"... and that's one of my favorite words. *S*

Woven in this sadness, this unequitable contemplation, there thrives the best that love becomes...unconditional.

Excellent write Susan.

Wow...

This has to be a difficult moment for any
one who stands in the wings when the main
players are together...wondering if they
will get a turn,  seeing the love being
shared...yet...knowing that in the back of
one person's mind there might be a second
thought brewing...of he/she who stands
alone...reluctantly sharing and wishing they
might taste the wine.

Excellently written Susan.  Yes Indeedy!
