The first time that I heard your voice
I must admit, you weren’t my choice.
Your nasal tones were not my style,
But as I listened for a while
Your lyrics captivated me
And I stayed tuned for your stories.

From “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim”
To LeRoy Brown – remember him?
The operator kept the dime,
You looked for ways to bottle time,
And when things started to go wrong
You said “I love you” in a song.

With workin’ at the car wash blues
You made a point and still amused.
Still, I preferred your songs of loss.
I recognized that lover’s cross -
If only hopes could be appeased
With photographs and memories.

When you were robbed of growing old
Many stories were left untold
For you lived far too short a life.
Your baby son and loving wife
Were not alone in missing you –
I admired you then… and still do.

In memory of Jim Croce, 1/10/43-9/20/73

Listening to every heart

Has it been THAT long ago?  I hear his music so often, I forget that he's gone...then a little tug on my heart reminds me, but my God...THAT long?

Ah honey, thanks for this!

Sunshine and Earth Angel: Thank YOU, kind ladies. *S* And yes... he's been gone longer than he was here... died just a few miles north of my Dad's farm.

He is one of my favorites just for the same reasons!  A friend of mine told me he had once met Jim while walking the streets of a college town. (The dead giveaway was the guitar strapped to his back!)  My friend stopped and asked him the proverbial question, "Are you Jim Croce?"  Jim sat his guitar down and the two talked for a half and hour or so!  My friend said he appeared as common as they come, but we know differently don't we! A keeper Jim is and so is this!

It doesn't seem possible that he's been gone so long.  I loved him.  I still love his music.  Why do the best ones die young?

Ruth,  I wish I could say this brought back
memories,  I never really knew him...I guess
because I was too wrapped up in being a
warrior,  sailing the seas beneath the blue.

On the other hand,  Orbison was very big on
my list....particularly "Pretty Woman",  one
of my favorites...1973 was a very long time
ago...I was three quarters shy of a dollar
then....young, dumb and full of vinegar and
not very much spice....

There's one singer whose music brought this kind of respect from me too...and he's still recording, though he never had JC's name recognition: Glenn Yarbrough....different genre, but his songs never fail to move me.

"you know it's kinda late..."
Wow, I sure do miss that guy. I enjoyed his music the first time I ever heard him sing, and still love to hear his soul sing.
Jim, you are remembered.

Right up there on my top ten list!

Great tribute to a great songwriter, musician, and singer!

jellybeans: You'd best be careful, my friend... or one of these comatose days, I'm gonna sneak over and steal your talented pen! *G* Thank you for reading! *S*

miscellanea: I couldn't work in the one song that's with me the most... These Dreams. *S* But yes... he was real... and I think that's one of the reasons his music is still fresh to us today. *S* Thank you! *S*

Pilgrimage: In retrospect, some of his songs seem precognitive... as if he knew his time was short. Thank you! *S*

Toerag: Thank you, dear man... so very much!

Magnus: I loved Roy, too. *S* This poem was at first about 3 singer/songwriters... but thoughts of Jim kinda took over. *S* Thank you! *S*

Ratleader: Yes! *S* That they do. *S* One in particular will always be dear to my heart. *S* Thank you for reading! *S*

Midnitesun: I had one of his CD's with me on this weekend's car trip... this poem resulted. *S* Thank you! *S*

ARH: I agree... it's incredibly beautiful... and even more so when you finally find someone who makes you understand just how valuable time is. *S* Thank you very much!

Marge: Thank YOU, kind lady... your response gave me a big smile. *S*

LeeJ: Thank you for thinking that... I hope you're right. *S*

Ericc: You just made my morning... my day... my week... my... *S* Thank you so much! *S*
