When I was still immortal And the world bowed to me deepest I remember her Sleeping in a tangle Of suit jacket and sheets Cooling Under the ceiling fans’ slow turnings Pillowed by the crush of a bridesmaids’ dress That earlier, had snugged her hips and breasts Just so Her neck and cheeks still glowing In the afterward And recall our conversation When she received the invitation ‘If we’re going to be attending a wedding At Duke University’s Rose Garden I need to get a white linen suit” “You’re going to do something, aren’t you?” “And maybe a hat, yeah, a boater" “You’re going to do something silly and embarrass yourself” “C’mon Libby, you know I don’t easily embarrass” “Well then, you’ll embarrass me in front of my family” “No Sugar, I’ll be the one disguised as a perfect gentleman” |
