Tonight

So your groom left you waiting at the alter
such a life altering falter
falling to the floor
like a dying white flower
your love flown to the wind
your fingers in the cake
searching the sky
for anything within reach
within a lightyear of loving you
someone to hold that umbrella over you
when the skies turn to black
it's a criminal rain
and a carrion thunder
blasting dreams to shards of glass
and empty heart-shaped boxes
the melted chocolate of your eyes
the coldness of these streets
when your only one is gone
on and on it pours down on you
and no, I won't drive you home tonight

So you sit on the edge of your bed
painting your cute little nails
and you stare at your face in the mirror
you wonder where he is tonight
you wonder who he's doing tonight
and now you want to escape your exile
your self-imposed restraining order to loving anyone
walking the neon streets
hiding your wounds
your need tattooed on your arm
along with your bruised little heart
club to club, fool to fool
tear to tear, fear to feel anymore
poor little doll with your smeared mascara
like blood thinning in the river
your tears drop, your hopes stop
on a dime
on a quarter to call a friend
and no, I won't drive you home tonight

So the child is gone
so you're suprised
the first bitter taste of reality
precious memories on your shelf
your heart collecting dust
promises inked in old letters
a boy who cared for you
warmth in December
cool relief in July
then, the pale pretty snowflakes
now, stinging crooked raindrops
and all those songs that reminded you of him
collected in the corner
you stop and think
stop and smile
and set fire to those ghosts
with your thoughts and feelings
and with an open, brand new heart
searching for new love
keeping the faith with your friends
believing in a flickering candle love
believing in yourself again
the night has fallen, the place is closing
not a flicker of eyelashes
to the ash grey past
you don't even have to ask
yes, I'll drive you home tonight

Zach, your style is so refreshing, and the content as well.  Few can match the smooth way you roll out the story, as if video taped.
