1966

Saturday night, the girls make up their pretty red hair
and the dirty satin clad preteen gambler
lines up chances on the hood of a cherry red Rambler
take your pick, take your girl out to the fair
make a dream reality, between the lights, nestled there
a hand made halo for you to wear
you look pretty, my New York City lady
in the Asbury Park evening shade
as Smokey Robinson cries out into the purple sky
lovers walk the boardwalk, they dance and they cry
for this summertime to never ever end
for the best of times to be comin' up 'round the bend
we make our promises to the tune of a carousel concerto
the stars climb out of the clouds, soft diamonds in their glow
the 22nd street ballerina still haunts the casinos and candy rows
as the late August moon blinks his code to the blue jean flamingos
smiling on the beach through the dizzy narcotic New Jersey night
I sigh my farewell to the awakening highway as your car dips out of sight
then I kick my boothills against the dirty green wall of the arcade
combing the sand out of my hair, I sing under my breath a pretty serenade
that I've kept inside me for oh I don't know just how long
but I know, sure as the salty waves roll to shore, it used to be our song
I'll keep it for you, like brand new, inside my pocket
just keep me near you always, next to your heart, in a silver locket
now I need to be headin' back to the city by train
where dreams aren't cheap but you can live in mine anytime, sweet Jane

I like the way this drifts through time and space, highlghting emotional markers that bring you to the present moment.
Enjoyed.

Ironically, I wasn't even alive in 1966. I wouldn't be born for another 13 years. But I have one of those "old souls", and I kinda wish sometimes I lived in 1966, not 2004. I'm weird that way. Anyway, thanks for the kind comments.

WOW..I have felt the same way...like I have an old soul and I feel like I should have been born ten years earlier. I wanted to be a sixties child...

This takes me back to soft summer nights and the dances of romance, promises, and memories of first love, music and bright dreams.  I still have a  crystal heart necklace with an arrow through it that my sweetheart gave me to keep close to my heart.

Thank you for sharing this--a time capsule which definitely made me smile.

My spirit will rise

There will be no drowning
