in the shadows

No rest for me tonight;
tired
with the bright sharp pains
that come sometimes
as brief reminders of mortality.

Tongues of Southern rains
rattle through these open windows,
and I feel the smallest animals
scurry through the brush,
hoping their soft sounds
will be missed
by shadow hunters stalking their next meals.

I don't have to imagine,
there are no deals
to make with any disembodied supernatural force,
no anodyne seems to scare away the pale horse pacing
just beyond my range of sight.

On nights as this,
I fail
at being made of ice and stone;
it isn't that I fear being alone,
it is the ache,
the cold deep ache that would...
if only...
if I could...
touch your hand
and press it to my heart,
and sleep
the dreamless sleep I lost
with innocence.

Cool!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

icebox - a very sad write and I'd better go before I cry.  It's just life though, isn't it?

such nights can be long.. and such knowing... painful in its ache.

This is beautifully done, the crashing of mortality in small night sounds.

Icebox, I haven't been around much lately and don't know how much time I'll have for today, but I could not help but take the time for this one.  I don't think I've read a better example of a visual emotion than the above.  Just a few simple words arranged in flawless manner have written a book here; and many of us have read that book, crying, when we embrace our own innocence again.  bravo.   ...jo

But we do catch glimpses....just often enough, eh?

Great write Boxdude!
