Exile at Dawn

It's another exile at dawn
stumbling out of your tenement
I sit on the steps, look around and yawn
staring at handprints in the cold pavement
like vintage wine spilled on poetry
I pour myself into a rain soaked cab
and like raven in Edgar Allen Poe's tree
I'm nevermore gonna know the love I had
I've lost her to the Central Park breeze
softly coming undone, my golden one
swept under a carpet of golden leaves
an October crown for my heart on the run
oh very young a beauty sung in the May sky
slipping into my arms, sipping black tea
on some bookstore settee, we laugh and cry
to the colorful grace of Charles Bukowski
the way your freckles move when you're sighing
I still remember the look of you under the moon
when it's just you and me and secrets ran free
we shared all in a dance to a Marvin Gaye tune
now I guess I gotta set loose these memories
and all those old records we'd share together
she set me free from my stale white mediocrity
but I guess I gotta send back my wings to her
or trade them for some brand new ones
'cause I know you don't want me back
you told me the night before that you're done
so I'll just lay here, stare at the night burnt black
I'll just stay right here at the warm blue Marriot
drink warm champagne till I'm on the floor
don't worry, don't say sorry, 'cause hey, I'm not
I got a date Friday with the girl next door
so hey, take it easy, tell your sister I said hi
in this hotel room I've made myself at home
to sit on the edge of the bed at 4 A.M. and sigh
but if you're not asleep yet we can talk on the phone
guess I'm sorry too, I was wrong
but I know you knew all along
and if you let me in again
I gotta let you know before we begin
sooner or later I'll probably be gone
in some selfish exile at dawn
