Listening to every heart

Stock, and Yards

Sometimes we take one step
at a time, especially in months with an “r”,
but those steps turn into yards
easily enough
over moments.

In taking stock
of life, of self, of time,
what’s left of mine,
I find that I don’t “stink”
so much.  It is September.

I don’t always call,
or write letters as I should
but I am with those I love,
mentally, perceptionally,
physically there…
wishing to close this self.

Doing what everyone has said
to do – “do for you for a change,”
[I hear chance!]
I try to capitulate to my own desires,
and find
brick walls, so close to home,
that my head bleeds.

But it is only figuratively,
not literally, and I believe maybe, it, too,
shall pass…
like a kidney stone.

No change comes without thought, to some
without consent, to all…

without desire, by one.

I have taken stock, looked in the mirror,
will deal with what I see…
will step, not by a bit at a time,
but by yards, in order to gain more.

For time is fleeting…my desires are long.

This poem would have been an exercise in "Strum und Drang" under almost anyone else's pen....but from yours comes gentle thought and introspective understanding. I like this poem very much, and for several reasons which you will also understand.

Loved the title, although being the farm girl that I am, I thought it was going to be about Stockyards!  Hm... Now you've really got me thinkun!

Sunnyone, go those yards, take that stone and kick a field goal, win the game...

Karilea, I see my little sis beat me to the punch on posting to this one.  That's good.  There was so much meaning throughout this heartfelt write and much between the lines, I think.  I am still thinking you're an angel for all you do and all you are attempting to do....stay strong, angel SIL.   ......jo

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
