The window’s ledge whispered softly
to Summer’s air as light faded
and a gentle downward push cleaved
the hurried noise below.  Soon, to be
replaced by the reflected eyes of a
giggling child counting taxi-cabs
and street lights.

Night brought to him the hunger that
wafted skyward from a vendor’s stand.
Gyros and hotdogs, pasta and peanuts.
All part of the nightly fare of hurried
spashes of mustard, catsup,  a wrinkled
brown bun awaiting the knife's edge.

The shrill cry of a policeman’s whistle
tickling an eardrum as pedestrians stood
impatiently, staring at the orange hand,
waiting for the chameleon to turn green.
Shuffling black shoes scraping the edge,
removing a week old piece of ABC gum.

Soon, the walk would stand silent as
corners swallowed shadows and ladies
walked in torn hose, hoping a trick would
fix the jitters, or was that the night’s
chill that froze the shoulder?

Yesterday brought in today, in colors
of tomorrow that seemed to always
streak and run into a reflection that
was but a memory.    Tomorrow
would again bring the whistle, the
siren’s wail...the smell of sausage
and biscuits as eggs over would cackle
the skillet.

And a child again stands in reflect of
a nose smudged pane, hoping to see
tomorrow before today became but
a shadowy form, awaiting a lonely
moon’s rise when a story whispered
softly to heavy lids would bring a
slight drool to rose colored lips as
a pillow groaned against the hug of
tiny hands, still damp from a
mother’s kiss.

Sir, this one, it touches me -   It captures transient yet repetative nature of life, slipping by . . . somehow I find it rather sad.

A very captivating write... the word "gyro" I haven't heard for a long time, it brought back memories of the east coast,, ( I live on the west coast)..

very touching Barry....

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken I just want you to know who I

This brought a lot of memories to mind,
one being how fleeting childhood is.

Really nice, cowboy~

Barry:

this was so bittersweet
as it reminded me so much of NY
and so much of childhood, goodness

you took the same old day
and made it shine . . .

so many powerful images of serenity and chaos, hope and fear

wonderfully woven, Kind Sir

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Very engaging write, Barry.  The imagery is absolutely superb in this one!  It brings to mind two things (1) That you don't have to be a "victim" or "product" of your environment through proper parenting and creating/or living in a loving home.  And (2) That is why I live in the country.  So, that I don't have to worry about sirens, prostitutes, urban chaos, or my childrens' presence in the thick of it.  It makes me sad for the social degradation, but happy that we still have abundant places to live the good life (like where I live) where people still wave when their driving by.
BTW, I always enjoy your incredibly gifted posts.

Your poetic friend,

Kevin
