If happy endings were for everyone
They’d not be so highly rated
I guess when something’s considered our due
It’s not appreciated.

Perhaps intimate knowledge of sorrow
And passing acquaintance with strife
Are sent to make us more aware of
The gifts we’re blessed with in life.

But how do I fit into this theory
This anomaly so contrary?
Joys I’d give thanks for eternally
Turn out to be temporary.

suthern,

this is so true, always after the fact
then do you realize what you once had:

Perhaps intimate knowledge of sorrow
And passing acquaintance with strife
Are sent to make us more aware of
The gifts we’re blessed with in life.

and they would have to be temporary gifts
or else we wouldnt be as grateful the next
time (ok that is some hokey nonsense we are
supposed to believe, but you know what I mean)

I like littlewing's reasoning
that it makes us appreciate the given  even more

felt this, Suthern, more than I wished

You have written a ton of wisdom into this.

I suppose that is the miracle, even when we finally see, it's never to late
the power is all around us...

Well done...I liked a lot!

littlewing: I've concluded that appreciation isn't the glue that holds joy to our side... else I'd be one giddily happy camper! LOL Thank you very much! *S*

Ericc: Thank you so much... those first two verses have been written for ages... the third one got stuck on my determination to include the word anomaly. LOL I should have just made it the title and gone on... but brick walls and I are long acquainted. *S*

nakdthoughts: I know you're too kind to be feeling it from the view of the entitled... so my heart goes out to you, knowing you feel the longing. *S* Thank you very much!

Magnus: Thank you so very much... I'm not used to being accused of wisdom... but I like it! *S*

Seymour: That they are, my friend... that they are... but at least their demise gives us an opportunity to wish without regrets. *S*

PS: Thank you, ma'am!!! *S*

Sunshine: I feel I just get hit by the falling apples! LOL Thank you very much! *S*

Toerag: And that I do... *S* But we have nots can still wonder at the haves... and wish. *S* (LOL @ Sy's teeth... you're incorrigible! LOL)

LeeJ: I'm so glad you like it! *S* As I said earlier... it's been an almost-poem for a long time... Thank you! *S*

I find so much truth in these words Suthern. I do believe this one hits the nail on the head dear gal, and it is felt so very deeply.

suthern,
You must have written this with me in mind!  Just kidding.  This is perfect.  It's good to read your work again.  I haven't been on the computer a lot-my ankle and leg still throb quite a bit.  Wish I could stop more frequently at each post, but I suppose that will come with time.  Until next time,
take care, Southern!  Meanwhile, I'll take this to the library for easy access!  Thanks.

Permanent flowers
freshly blooming forever,
scents, colors changeless;
what would we not give for them?
Yet, if it were so,
in time would we not come to
value them no more than leaves?

Pessimists like me sometimes think that there are no such things as happy endings -- but that's not true. Endings aren't really endings at all, just beginnings based on what has gone before -- and they can be very happy. The key is to take the joy that we find, whatever happens, and hold it close.

I like this little Choka -- if you don't mind, I think I'll post it separately...

Marge: You sweetie... I am... and it's even by God, not by Clairol! LOL Thank you very much! *S*

GS: They must exist for some reason... right? *S* Thank you so much! *S*

miscellanea: Knowing the discomfort you suffer to read poems, even one visit from you is an honor. *S* Thank you very much! *S*

Jamie: Mind??? *S* Not hardly!!! *S* I thank you very much... to have someone read my work feels like an undeserved gift... to have someone keep one of my poems in their library is an incredible honor... but I don't think anything is a greater tribute to a poet than knowing someone was inspired to write from my words. *S* Yes... take the joy as it's found... and hope. *S* Thank you!!

Suthern beloved one this is not just wisdom its truth, and OH how I wish you were to get what you deserve. For your life would then be suffused in joy and wonder and I would know that you were appreciated. Not that even then it would be a tenth of what you deserve, for there are so few who can and do write well, and then there’s you, who writes enchantment and leaves this poor soul wishing I could.

As always beloved one your writing awes me with its power and insight, love it and love you more

suthern...This poem fits so many of us. Wanting our rewards in life that never seem to come our way. Tasting the good things in life only too have them taken away. This reminds me of a song by Three Dog Night, " Easy To Be Hard ". Enjoyed...Paul

Oh suthern gal, don't I know it.
That feeling of life in the balance is
so difficult to maintain.
The simple beauty in this is beyond me,
and yet I found such comfort in your words.

Thank for sharing your heart and touching mine at the same time.

warm hugs to you~

May the balance hang heavy on the side of good times in your life.

Tis true that most times it is temporary but the gifts you have within yourself are as permanent as you are in this realm so those are the ones you must try to enjoy the most. Be happy within yourself and then others will flock to see what the heck you are so happy about.  Very insightful write with wisdom included.  Enjoyed much.

Ah you see, but even temporary gifts are gifts and have the potential of being eternally felt. Lovely write.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

You know I used to ask that as well but then I figured I was probably getting more pleasant little moments than I deserved.  So, I started giving them out in quality instead of quantity to others.  What happened was that I did start to reap what I sowed. Ruth, I know this one big time.  Nicely done.
