CLEAR THE CHANNEL

Copyright 2004 by:  Mark V Sheldon

Repetition
   Have you heard it?
Repetition
  On every station
Repetition
  Can’t escape it
Repetition
  Throughout the nation

Every hour
   It spins again
Every hour
  On top of the chart
Every hour
  Your money buys friends
Every hour
   No room for art

Favors decide
  Which one’s a hit
Favors decide
  If it will be heard
Favors decide
   The order they fit
Favors decide
   If it is assured

Sponsorships
   Legal payola
Sponsorships
  For a good cause
Sponsorships
  Money is stolen
Sponsorships
  To feed greedy jaws

Internal memo
  Tells them what to play
Internal memo
  Keeps it off the list
Internal memo
  Dictates what to say
Internal memo
   Makes you clench your fist

Automation
  DJ’s are fired
Automation
  Money is saved
Automation
  Relatives hired
Automation
  Shows are pre-taped

Homogeny
  Formula songs
Homogeny
  All sound the same
Homogeny
  Diversity gone
Homogeny
  Radio’s lame

Clear the channel
  Play your CD’s
Clear the channel
  Stream from the Net
Clear the channel
  Buy MP3’s
Clear the channel
  And let them regret

Too true, Mark. If you don't fit into a marketable mould, you're just never offered for public consumption on most stations.

boy, do I know about this well, through a cousin of mine...who, by the way, didn't play the games, and now, might be onto something very big and successful, without "THEM"

I like this...keep that pen flowing, but remember there will be a consequence for that vigulante stuff...you'll walk alone perhaps most of the time...someone told me a long time ago...must be a lonely place to be sometime...but I've never regreted standing up for what I believe in...

Good good luck Mark!!!!

One of my favorite radio stations that offered jazz and folk, world music and new age went off the air due to not enough corporate sponsorship.  Now I listen to CDs.  Makes it hard, though, to find new stuff unless I browse the isles at the CD store.  Not big into music on the computer.  Lack of education in that department.

Enjoyed this.  You've a real talent.

Susan

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

Your song sings loud and clear of coming
times and how it may be.

Indeed, Kacy, so I say find other outlets and venues and go straight to the source -- the public -- WITHOUT the filters of the corporations.

LeeJ:  I don't fear controversy;  rather, I welcome it.  If that is the only thing that will put a bright halogen spotlight to issues that need to be addressed and talked about, then bring it on!  People need to become more aware and begin discourse which can lead to action which leads to change on OUR terms rather than theirs.  In terms of "a lonely path"...  well, I know that like attracts like so somewhere along this path I'm sure I'll meet more real friends who share parallel points of view and are not afraid of positive change.  It's long overdue...

Susan:  Too many such quality stations have succumbed to this monopolistic corporate behemoth.  Freedom of choice?  On radio?  That's a good one.  You would be sickened if you discovered and experienced first-hand the degree of corrupt politics in radio.  And they say that "payola is illegal"...  The best thing that an artist can do is make some noise locally and through alternative places like www.cdbaby.com  and www.justplainfolks.org  which truly have the musician's and artist's best interests in mind.  That is where you'll find the "REAL" music pulse of current times rather than the ten manufactured "hits" which never leave rotation on the "best mix" stations.  (How's that for a vent?   )  (and thank you much for your thoughts and kind words).

Sy...  I hope "them" isn't "THEM"     Thank you, Sir for your kind words here AND in this forum.

Thank you for the read and response, Eric.

Barry, unfortunately, those times have come a LONG time ago...  It's simply time for more people to become aware and vocal.  It's in the air with movies like F/911 and OUTFOXED.  We've been pawns for so long, but at least it used to be discreet.  Now, they could care less, and things are blatant to the degree of shocking.  Thanks for your thoughts...
