Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2004-08-24 10:39 PM

In another lifetime I played the game of “Darts”
Somewhere between painting and photography
I discovered I was a “Natural”
And once owned a bar largely devoted to it

I Found myself traveling to tournaments
Up and down the Eastern Seaboard
And west To Cleveland
Where a $100,000 event was held annually

But it was in the dark, dank Mens Room
Of a “Dart bar” in Washington D.C
That I saw my two, all-time favorite bits
Of bathroom graffiti

Both pieces of verse were scrawled at eye level
Above the same urinal
The first, boldly proclaimed that said urinal
Was “The Ed Rose Memorial wishing well”

Written presumably by a crestfallen Gent
That had some days before
Been parted from his rent money
By a now honored Me

The other, authored obviously by another
Offered up this small observation
“Time flies like arrows”
“Fruit Flies like oranges”

And only now, do I consider those words
That the Fruit Fly actually is a Time Fly
Living his entire life in the span of one day
The first half in light, the last in darkness

But that day, as short as it is, is his lifetime
Just as yours is yours, and mine is mine
And who’s to say what constitutes a life?

As long as there is time enough

Indeed Ed...as long as there is time enough.  Bravo. I enjoy your words very much, and am glad to see them more often here in the pages of blue. Well done sir.

Seems we're both pondering this evening Ed.  Though I will admit, my present inspiration is not so colorful as yours.  Thanks for the story and something to think about other than the stuff in my own head...

not only a keeper but a very wise story to ponder...this was brilliant and alive with a familiar music....a tune that I've known and felt before...that pain, the surprise of happiness but mostly learning respect for one's soul...and travels.

Entirely enveloping this one.

I was on the verge of one of my long-winded replies when I read serenity's... and with that one word, she said everything! *S* Excellent work!
