WITHOUT JUDGEMENT

Copyright 2004 by:  Mark V Sheldon

What do you see when you look at me?
Just the clothing that I wear?
Does your first impression suit your expectation
Is there something more that I should be?

Have the colors faded to black and white?
Am I more than you can bare?
Can you see within, beneath my skin?
Does the tattoo taint your eye?

Do you wonder how others see it?
Does the world fit your mold?
Do you take things at face value
And believe all that you’re told?
Can you look at me without judgement?
Can you see me for who I am?
Are you willing to let go what you think you know
And begin to give a damn?

Are my customs and manners like large red banners?
Do my outlooks challenge your own?
Does my style of speaking require some tweaking?
Would you feel the same if the roles were reversed?

Does what I eat repulse you?
Can you get past that we’ve grown?
Have you found what you’ve been seeking?
Ever question what you hold to be true?

Do you wonder how others see it?
Does the world fit your mold?
Do you take things at face value
And believe all that you’re told?
Can you look at me without judgement?
Can you see me for who I am?
Are you willing to let go what you think you know
And begin to give a damn?

And the irony is while we were kids
We knew we’d be best friends for life
Until school came along and taught us we were wrong
Acceptance was a double-edged knife

It’s not a new spin -- we just wanted to fit in
Everyone wants to belong
It’s tough to stand alone when your mind is all your own
And it feels like you can’t win

Do you wonder how others see it?
Does the world fit your mold?
Do you take things at face value
And believe all that you’re told?
Can you look at me without judgement?
Can you see me for who I am?
Are you willing to let go what you think you know
And begin to give a damn?

"Are you willing to let go what you think you know
And begin to give a damn?"

Profound thinking.  Great write!

I think it's wonderful that
people change...
I find it disheartening to know
that somehow, acceptance
is forgotten...

Good job here.
