Some days I watch as you take and he gives
(I want to shake you, make you wake up
and see he is a rare, priceless man)

And sometimes I see the scene reverse,
and he seems to do all the taking
in a winner-takes-all scenario
with you doing nothing but the giving
(I want to scold him for
this macho need to be in charge)

Then, I remember when I was not so very old
I was told by someone much wiser than I,
this is how most relationships progress
to a higher level,
where each has the upper hand
when they feel they must.

Bu wouldn’t it be nice
if that were never necessary?
Wouldn’t it be best if all our needs
were fulfilled,
if all our deeds were performed
without ever feeling a need to be
in control of any one else?

Wouldn't it be best
if only self-control
would rule the nest?

Yes, indeed Kacy ... if only that was the way relationships could be. An equal share of give and take, without it being a task to do so. Enjoyed this piece as I do all of your writings. hugs, Chris

Sometimes I read things that aren't there....lol...

Self control
she said with sly smile
as she traced a finger
along the side of my jaw
as if promising me she would
touch the words that fell
from lips if I spoke

I simply grinned
and savored the soft sound of finger
against the stubble of a 5 AM shave
that had now seen noon

yeah...that should do it.

It is a subtle thing you ask for, self-control, but then we'd have to rewrite human nature all the way to Cain and Abel.  hmmm

Yes, it would be nice....but I have never seen seen it happen, have you?  Well, maybe not true....I have seen it happen in one-sided situations where one person relinquishes control totally to the other.  Interesting thoughts here........jo
