My world of long ago
pays dividends in dreams
and banks remembrances
away from prying eyes
but I feel how they search
and try hard to find
my avowal of disregard
for my yesterdays.

Silently they sit
in the middle of the “now”
changing shape, enlarging,
on the edge of imagination
forcing me to focus
on exactitudes.

The what, when, how, comes alive
like stories told to the young
sitting at the feet of the old ones
but the why remains beyond my reach
somewhere in the clouds.

It’s winter still, no clouds pass by,
but when they come again
they’ll only bring the rain
to keep me unenlightened
and under cover of the “now”.

And to the young what will I say
when they sit at my feet one day
listening to an old woman’s tales
with beginnings but never an end?

Helen, I so much enjoy your ponderings as they are much like mine. Oh, I think we will have some tales for our grandchildren, but I do get the drift of what you're saying.  I felt much melancholy with the poem.  My poetry today was very dark (rare for me)...I'm wondering if I'm reacting to something else ... kind of like the long winter you're having.  Be well, my friend.   ....jo

Thanks for the read, Jo.  Well, I guess when comparing reality to dreams, melancholy is the result.  I suppose one shouldn't do that and I'm trying not to "go there no more" but spring is around the corner and may bloom a fairy tale.  One can always hope.

Still a worthy investment. Those memories and experiences make us who we are.

Enjoyed the read.

I enjoyed this one.  Sometimes I feel ringed in by the 'now', and I have to do a little memberizing.

Profound!  Isn’t that the whole truth?
