In New Zealand Amongst the Ancient Trees

Ethiopia 1984 – 85, 1,000,000

There they sit
with bloated gut.
No food no water
their eyes are shut.
Skeletal frames
hunched in a squat.

I traded love for death.
Now I look for a place
I might call home.
Where the air is clean,
the grass green, and I
may feel clean again.

Somalia 1991 – 92, 500,00

Flies  hovering,
looking for lunch.
Sucking the remnants
of life through the skin.
Its hard to imagine
A human so thin.

I traded love for death.
Now I look for a place
I might call home.
Where a small orchid blooms
and the deep green leaves rustle
at the heart of life.

Ethiopia / Horn of Africa 2002, 14,000,000

I stop, I bend,
I lift, the child,
she does not shift.
I test for life, too late.
That which is left
I toss in an open pit.

I traded love for death.
Now I look for a place
I might call home.
Where bouquets of daisies
and small children
dance upon the grass.

Sudan 2001,  in waiting ?

No service no sermon,
just miles of kids
crawling with vermin.
The call comes again
to rent the earth on caterpillar
tracks then fill it in the same.

I Traded love for death.
Now I look for a place
I might call home.
With crystal clear water
Where dragon flies dream,
And the wind carries no scream.

Just as my memories
reach into your mind,
winters fingers of fog
are chilling the brain
erasing my memory banks.
Does anyone really care

I do.  I do. And I am wondering, were you an international volunteer, a health team member?
You write with an awareness that few ever experience first hand, and with a compassionate heart beat.
I'll be looking for more of your posts.

too.  Yes, I do, too.  I would like to see all the money that's spent on all the political campaigning in the world go to feeding the impoverished.  It is a crime.  Very significant and important social poem, prophet.   ...jo

Yes, many care more than you know.  Would that the media would focus on them as much as on those who commit to death and destruction.  Perhaps then a revolution would take place, when one realizes their efforts are not in vain and "one" can make a difference.

Though I am more active on a community level, I feel the pain of the world.

You've written this so poignantly, a cry from the wilderness.  Would that you could be heard and the message heeded.

Well done . . . and remember you are not alone.

Susan

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

Midnitesun, I have spent time in many places for many reasons not always good ones. Thank you for the read.

iliana, 50% of the money currently spent on arms and munitions would solve all the problems. Then again others argue - would the world be able to sustain everyone.

Susan, It will take a major shift of human thought process's for any change to take place, not to mention removing any notion of greed from our thoughts.

muted, thank you.

Gentle Spirit, thank you also.
