Death of a Majestic Tree

A Jury of my peers
has convicted you:
“Guilty by existence!”
“Death by guillotine!”
— Is the verdict of Man;
But the Jury and the Judge
Have never felt your cooling shade.

And I but stand and watch,
A witness bound to silence;
While inside my world
A lonely child cries.

You release your final breath
And in screaming silence fall
— Not to rest — but to let
A thousand shrieking teeth
Devour your bleeding flesh.

And I stand and watch;
I — a Juror and a Judge,
And inside my world
A lonely child cries.

Yes, I have felt the pain of watching a magnificent tree fall -- truly it can be an emotional experience --

Well said --

I am reminded of the feeling I had when I read Shel Silversteins, The Giving Tree.  I very much like your poem and will carry it to my library.  Thanks for the gifting.
