Never before had I seen so many tears shed,
I even cried myself to sleep that night.
You left us all for legitimate reasons,
Though that didn't help soften the pain.
I was only just getting to know you,
And already I was greatly impressed.
It's still hard to believe that the fun ended as
   quickly as it had begun.
I'll never forget everyone's stunned faces,
We knew we were losing someone great.
The last time we were called to attention,
And we said our little "ritual",
I knew it was over and ok to cry.
The memory will forever be with me,
The night we said goodbye to the best band director
   anyone could ask for.
So no matter how much it hurts to believe it,
I know it's true.
You're gone.

One of my favorite people when I was growing up was my band director, too.  He left our sophomore year.  We mourned for a whole year after that and looking back, I pitty the man who tried to take his place, now.
