your mea culpas come too late
for hundreds who are staring
at the inside top
of a box in the ground
or from scattered ashes

your mea culpas come too late
to comfort the hearts
of the ones who've suffered
the well-documented results
of war

your mea culpas
do not offer you
a legitimate excuse
for not telling the truth
and putting it on page one,
alongside the disguise,
the outright lies

and as a citizen
mea culpa
for letting you
get away
with murder

Yes, Dixie, it is beyond sad.

And dear gentle poet, those who only receive a verbal punch are the lucky ones. Thank you, for always being a gentle heart.

When you write social poetry, you alway write with strength and truth.  How did we ever let the nation come to this, exactly.   .....jo

thank you Lee
yes, it came from my gut-level reaction to the Washington Post's 'apology' for having put critically inportant news on the last page, and for being a bit too soft on our government's headlong rush into war with Iraq.
The Post is not usually one to back away from the truth, as far as I can recall.

anyway, thanks to all who read and listen carefully, always seeking the elements of truth

"Sorry, but not very" seems to be the theme these days doesn't it? You write with an intestinal fortitude about social issues that really should be distilled and distributed like a vaccine. Great write.

I think solar plexus just about nails it.  Well done!  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light
