"Breathe deeply.
Feel the warmth of the sun
upon your cheeks."

"I can’t,"  she cries,
"my lungs are too weak,
my skin is stretched too taut
over these scraggly thin bones."

And with that,
the nurse sighs and steps away
to the next bed,
where another frail patient
breathes deeply
her final breath of life.

AIDS.
Too few aides to combat AIDS,
partly because too much of the world’s
financial aide still goes
for the production and deployment of weapons.

Some day we shall overcome
our own shortsightedness.

Meanwhile, the scourge ravishes
millions, as the weapons do the same.

Yes, mass destruction unfolds before our eyes;
but not exactly the same scenario as the one
highlighted by recent political verbosities.

all too familiar a description, Kacy

hard work, being an aide no matter what the cause of illness

(and yes, I understood the meaning behind the words, sighing)

Kacy,  this is exceptional!  And, sad to say,
so very true as well....

Our lives cover the span of a grain of sand
in a moving desert ocean.  When compared to
our earth,  our history...sometimes brings
a helpless feel to the soul of those who
wish to change what has not over millions of
years...  If only we could...

tis sad, this, sad in its truth.

You've a unique gift for calling our attention to the real truths of the world.  Well put.  Ken

Bless your heart, Kacy!  You have such a tender heart and you use your writing skills boldly.  I was just thinking about similar situations in the world today, all the starving people in Africa, and South Americans whose only survival is the drug trade...there are so many wholesome pursuits our nation could take to make the world a better place.  Just imagine what the dollars spent on war could have done for a third world county that someday, because of deprivity, will be another enemy.   ....jo

Maureen, thank you for reading.
Magnus, thank you for your kindness. It is a tough scene.
Susan, it is very sad.
Ken, thanks, I always look forward to reading your comment.
Jo, sweet poetry sister, it is true, we spend billions on 'defense' and still miss the primary targets.
