sunshine shimmers
on blue frosted day
trees draped in white finery
crystalline in beauty
prisms of colors dance
in scattered steps across
blankets sewn of sequins
enveloping the landscape

an ice cold chill
stills the air
kissing the skin
in a glacial greeting
stinging the cheeks rosy red
blushing with the conceit
of visions most fair
crisp and unflinching

Winter struts and flaunts
her pale white worn loveliness
pure as a virgin
before known to man
seductive in her invitation
to experience her embrace
and inhale the breath of her
to imbibe of her bittersweet allure

Where are my overcoat and gloves?  Sheesh,
will it be cold in the morn?  Excellent
visions you have captured of a season which
brings to a standstill the greenery,
letting the greys overwhelm as whites cover
the landscapes...  I knew there was a reason
I lived south of the Mason-Dixon line....

But....am I missing something?

Me thinks there is more to this
than meets the eye at first....
Beautiful write, Susan.

Thank you all for your replies.  One of my favorite things to do in winter on the moutain was to snowmobile up to the state land atop the mountain where the snow was virgin and the beauty almost indescribable.  And on those days when the hoar frost rose, it was as if diamonds were scattered about reflecting amazing rainbows across the land.  Incredible.  I was revsiting these memories when I wrote this.

And Barry, though I too am not into cold weather, I've seen few sights in this world that can compare to virgin snow beneath frosty blue sky in the wilderness --

I am so pleased you all enjoyed my reminicing.

This very beautiful Susan.
I grew in a winter state,now I'd rather be
where its warm.

:-)

Love the poem,it makes one see it in their mind's eye.

from one lover of winter to another, beautiful! I can hardly wait for winter skies and first snow!

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone though you're still with me
I've been alone all along..Now I'm bound by the life you left behind

Thanks Krawdad and Greeneyes.  Winter is just around the corner, though I am most enchanted with Fall as well.  Okay, each season has a place in my heart
