A Safer Landing

quote:
August 7 & 8

POETRY & PRIVACY

Critics despair over ‘confessional or personal’ poetry,
despite the fact that it goes back beyond Blake to
early Greek and Roman times and in the last hundred
years or so has included The Browning’s, Whitman,
Lowell, Millay, Auden, Plath and on and on.

~*~

This empty vessel finds her well again,
Arriving bereft, to sit before your words,
Amazed [shocked?] to discover
You still feel the empty, too, and wonder,

“…is that all there is?”

Maybe August does it, as you say,
Summer has run away with love,
And we will rust along, trusting
Another summer will serve us again,

I should feel full, tides are turning,
Blessed by two full moons of July,
Yet

Grains are slipping through wizening hold
As briefly as a thought visits
Before it floats to another’s muse
And I sigh, here, I wish I had written that…

Considering pens in their cup, a note
Before me, lines drawn through this
And that word,

Seeing the bare skin left on this
Delete key as letters fade from my touch,
Ignoring the Page Up button
Because I’ve been there,
Disregarding Page Down

Because all below me is hollow
Blank white, and I wonder, is it
Really waiting for something from me?

Or another?

May be that it is my time to sit back,
Reflect a bit, read more of you, because
You do go on and on, and I grab you
To me, embrace you in my mind…
Curse you for landing in my life,
Thank you for landing in my life,
Making it as mysterious, and safe
As a landing could be…

While tempting me always
To fly again.

~*~

After reading this I must add to the greats, on the list of confessinals....

Ginsberg...Anne Sexton...Adrianne Rich
Sharon Olds and Karilea Rilling

I confess... I love the poetry of all of the above...

To me, the cleansing act of writing either aids another, heals oneself, or stores up a healing for a future wound.  What's not to like.
I always wonder at where you find your wondrous thoughts. Well done!  KJ

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

LOL...all of you are so fantastic - just when I think the well's run dry, you all manage to prime the pump one more time!

nicely done ma'am... August seems strange this year as was July... and in the end perhaps it is simply our perceptions that are strange... strangely the norm..

Mmhmm,
I like this one!
There are more then one empty papers,
the one in front of you is waiting for your words.
So, get to it

Karilea -- You did not write this just for Martie, of course, you wrote it for your SIL, as well!  I liked everything about this.   ....jo

Kariela...you have no need for a safe landing, you always soar in my book

...but, if it's any consulation, we all have moments when we think perhaps we should just lay down our pens and give up, when our muse has headed for the hills with no sign of return and when all we see before us is an empty white piece of paper or screen...join the crowd my dear friend, you'll have lots of company
