                When sadness boiled over
                 Condensing water upon pot lid
He put the timer on humor,
Instigating the evil trick we did

You’d have to know my cooking
               The burning, alarming smell
To fathom how we pulled it off
                This caper, oh so well.

                The charring of my toast,
                 The blackening of the sausage
                 The pancakes on the ceiling
                 From slightly over-tossing

The perfect wilt of a salad,
                 The wondrous pudding drip
Oh, really my cookings not that bad!
                When eating, remember one thing
                Just keep closed your lips!

With the background you now have
                I’ll tell you all the rest;
                My father died in August,
                My mother, very sad.

The day of her birthday was
                 Timed near his death;
                 How could we light
                 Dampened candles?
                 It simply
                didn’t
                 have the luminous effect.

My rainbow friend took care of that.
At his cleverness I have to laugh!

                 He handed me a recipe
                 For most delicious icing;
In his hand he held the key,
                 Styrofoam, to be iced--so enticing
                 (much better than my bake!)

                 My mother
                 was ever so pleased
                 to see my sacrifice
She knew my detest for cooking
Knowing, in love the cake was made!

                  When we lit the candles
Her eyes, in tear, held my fathers space.

For a flaming instant, we fell
                  Within her deadening eyes,
                  Praying  that she, at first,
                  Wouldn’t notice our cake’s disguise.

(oh, yes, we had taken every measure
                   rounding  styrofoam corners,
                   making lumps, removing all perfection,
                   putting in place every bump!)

As we handed her the knife,
We had a little impish in our eyes,
                   But  she missed it…
With grace, she tried to chisel
                   And chisel,
                   Politely chisel
                   The styrofoam in hide.

                   When she saw our caper,
                   life invaded her face.
                   This just goes to show
Humor goes a long, longg ways.

(My mother knew this cake had to be real because she saw me making the real, identical one by scratch.  Believe it or not, it was yummy!)

Thanks, Lee J.  It was a sad, sad time, but my rainbow friend lived the philosophy, "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade."  We were so blessed to have had him in our lives for a while. He was a good teacher, much better than I am a learner!   Thanks for your comment, Lee J.  It made me linger just a while longer in those memories.

I know the tear of tear
in up-down days of fear and cheer,
and I approve this poem's delight
to bring again a heart to light.

Glad you liked it, Susan.  I spent the night at my Mom's last night, thinking of old times.  Thanks for reading.

...and I say yes, make lemonade and when it's nice and cold, throw it in Life's face and tell Life to get its soggy bleep back to the store and bring you what's on the list.....

...which is a saying I didn't originate, but I love it even though it ain't nearly as amusing as this poem!

muted,
What a nice reply.  I won't take the credit-the idea was my friend's.  Once in a while I think back and really miss the invention of his mind.  There are such unique people in the world, such as yourself.  It's good to hear from you again.

Jo,
You needn't say anything.  I spent that night at mom's house, and a muse just came to mind.  It was a nice visit.
