Defining Moment

All summer long I’ve heard a song lulling me to sleep at night.
When the Blue Moon came along, I heard the lightening crack.
Thunder rolling in the distance, I thought I’d step outside.
I opened up my front door, and, ah, found a great surprise.
There, quite emboldened at my feet, I heard the sweetest little tweet.
It took a moment to realize, this baby bird was learning flight.
But he hadn’t yet learned the knack, and he just looked at me in shock.
I heard his mother’s searching plea and from on her perch she eyeballed me.
A moment stood quite still in time. Just for that moment we were fine.

But at the window peering out, my loud–mouthed dog gave a shout.
Poor little bird, scared to death, and mommy tweeting, “Run for your life.”
The baby mockingbird ran off and under the gate into the garden.
Mother Mockingbird then flew, atop my mailbox, still in view,
Cheeping to her baby bird, “Fly now dear, I’ve faith in you.”
Low and behold, before my eyes, that baby bird began to fly.
Mind you, not quite way up high but he made it to the shrubs.
Now mama bird decides to move to coax her baby from the woods.
She raises cheeps to higher ground, encouraging chirps now abound.

At that point, and at that time, I knew that I had to resign and
Go back inside the house again, for thunder roared, and there was rain.
And when some things are watched too closely, we never see the change.
This morning when I checked the mail I looked for mockingbird so frail.
There were no feathers anywhere. The baby bird was no more there.
I felt joy and I felt hope, the little one had flown the coupe!

Tonight I hear mockingbirds sing and I’m thinking of this precious thing.
I’m awed by timing of a storm; awed by the timing of lessons learned;
Awed by a need that called in me to step outside the door
To see
The thing that I had seen --
The moment
That defined his being.

Jo - Have you any idea how many people would see that and not give it a second thought?  I'm so very glad you did!  Enjoyed the end especially.

Wanna hear a short story???  OK, I'll tell ya anyway...
My mom found a baby bird outside where she worked once.  It'd been blown out of a nest on top of the building by a storm the night before, and then spent several hours unprotected from a hot sun, before she found him.  So, she takes him to a vet and the vet tells her that the bird is blind, severely dehrydrated, will probably not live very long and offers to put him down.  But she says no and asks the vet what to feed him, etc.  She left thinking that she would at least feed the little critter and give him a chance, never really expecting him to live, just not able to bring herself to have him put down.  Well, not only did he live, but he thrived.  He was the coolest little bird.  Had his cage memorized and got around just as if he was sighted.  If you changed anything on him, he'd get pissed and throw his food all over the cage.  And he loved road trips with the windows down.  My mother would play him audio tapes of birds every morning in the winter (in the summer she put him on the patio to hear live birds) and he'd sing along, mimicking whatever bird was whistling.  I guess he had no idea what kinda bird he was, so he learned all the languages...lol.
He lived to be really old, 12 or 13, I think.  Anyway, that's my bird in storm story.  Thanks for letting me ramble...

Jo...This is an adorable story and yes, defining moment.

Reminded me of a bird I found, a baby like the one at your door, only no mom could I find or hear.  I brought it in, thinking to rescue it, gave it a name, Dirty Bird, and kept it on a little shelf in the den.  I loved that bird!  It came to believe I was its mom...what loud noises it would make when I came near.  I learned the finest art of worm finding and offering in motherly duty.  The end wasn't so sweet, but everything has one, I guess.

Martie, that was a precious story.  Thanks for adding it here.  It makes sense to me that you would rescue it -- and I can just imagine the effort you had to make to find the worms and then feed them, just the right way.  It almost makes me giggle; except for the ending.  Here's another one:  Last summer, a dove was in the exact same spot as this little mockingbird I wrote about.  So weird.  It was hurt; I thought it was a goner because it could not sit up; it looked dead at first because it was lying on its side.  My daughter and I scoped it up and took it to the wildlife rescue place in our area because there was so much west nile virus going around killing all the bird.  They told us there that its wing was broken and didn't think it was sick. They thought it would make it. They rehab birds there and then set them free.  I think that is such a neat place. Isn't it interesting how creatures find us, especially birds?!

Jo, what a beautiful soul you are!!
This is such a wonderful heartwarming story.
I'm so pleased you shared it with us here.
It stormed here all night and this made me run to my porch to make sure none of the newborns were blown from the nests around here. LOL.

(tears up in joy) Yay! (does happy dance) Oh Jo, I know these special moments ever so well, because when I was a little boy, I got one of those butterfly-raising kits and it came with five caterpillars that you get to raise, and I watched them grow each day, and then get into their cocoons, and when they became butterflies and learned to fly, I remember I cried that I had to let them go now because they were soooooo beautiful and they felt just like family to me raising them, but I knew it was the right thing to do and it made me smile watching them fly off, imagining all the pretty flowers they'd kiss and all the friends they'd make with other butterflies! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, this so deeply touched my heart that I'm adding this to my angel library, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Jo, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Jo,
I know how precious this moment must have been!  It reminds me of our George, an American kestal found on the farm.  I've been wondering what to write about.  Perhaps, I can muster up something now.  Enjoyed your sweet reflection.

Oh, iliana, I do not know how I managed to almost miss this delightful defining moment?!?

Not only did your story choke me up, but so did the bird stories of our fellow Pipsters!
What a lovely post this is and I enjoyed reading your narrative poems and the replies as well!

Bless you ~ and the baby mockingbird!

A lovely write from a lovely lily.

and this is a defining poem of your talent, dear friend.

the title, the summation, said it best.

You too, grow pinfeathers and fly right before our very eyes and I'm so glad to witness this.

Hugs dear jo, I love the way you think.

Told you I'd be back.     A most definitive moment, this...when we witness what we overlook in our own young'uns so often...that moment when they step out on their own.  Who is there to cheer them on?  For there are SO many "defining moments."

Well done, Jo!
