There you go again,
Whispering in my ear
A word.
Just one word.
And you want me to speak it.
Roll it out of my mind onto
The pages in black and white.
I don’t have the time.
Oh, Fine.
“It’s easy,” I hear you coaxing.
Now the dogs are barking.
Perhaps, they feel your presence.
It’s 2 a.m.
Now, go away.
For there are others sleeping;
The dogs will wake them.
Go away.
I will say the word.
Silently, of course.
Go away and leave me
To my sacrifice.

I heard an angel speak a word,
But I had to chase him off.
The lesson of the poem to come
Was one that he had brought.
The word he gave was “sacrifice.”

“Sacrifice.”

I cried.

There is nothing left in me
To give the one I love,
Except a poem I pen tonight.
My sacrifice of words.
I rip them
Pull them
Tensify them
And write them here for you.
It may not be
Poetry
But,
This “sacrifice”
Will do.
“Thank you, are you through?”
My angel questions me.
Well, I don’t know
If more will flow.
Is there some way to guide me?
What can I say of “sacrifice”
That’s not been said before?
“That’s not the point,”
He speaks again.
“That’s not the point
Of this lesson.
To burn a place in people’s hearts,
You have to give up your own thoughts.”

Oh, okay....now, I’ll drift
Now I’ll jump right off that cliff
And let you guide me like a kite
Offer up my heart in flight.
Is that “sacrifice?”
“That’s a start.”
“But you must lighten up your heart
Or it will tumble to the ground
Stay flying, gal.
Don’t put down!”

Okay, and smiling, wow,
This flying high
Has parted clouds.
And lifted up --
By letting go.
Am I finished now?
“Yes, it’s so.
Sacrifice,
Now you know."

Jo! You made me shiver in delight for your achievement in this poem!
To let go is not easy, we see it a sacrifice, but what heights do we reach when only love, pure and unconditional, fills our hearts.
This goes into my library .... thank you!
A memorable message.
Love and hugs. Margherita

Margherita, I am so flattered by your comment...but it really was just letting go, really.  Thank you so much.

Jo, sending something by e-mail, thought you would like it as it falls naturally in line with this

Karilea - if I whisper, will you listen?  Keeping in mind, I must stand close...

Some other apt titles for this wonderful write could be:

"Lily Jo Letting Go"

or how about this one? ~

"Lily Jo's Conversation With An Angel"

Or

"Lily Jo Earns Her Wings" Angel 3

Jo, This is simply wonderful and touches on truth more than can really be unquestionably known.  Thank you for so aptly putting into words ... the thoughts of an angel.  If we could but all be "angels" - but to sincerely try is perhaps all that is required.  I do like to hope so because I'm afraid I don't quite make the grade just yet.

inkedgoddess - It did spill...just like it is.  Thanks, Inked One for your positive comment!

scorpio - Intensity -- thanks!  Well, I was annoyed a little when I started because I heard the word, knew I had to write it before I went to bed and it was just so late!  Thanks for the encouragement!  *hugs*

Sunshine - Karilea, I am in awe of your poem.  I sat here with tears in my eyes when I read it.  I realized there are so many, many, really all, poets that go through this process of sacrificing when their muse attacks, or in some cases, nudges.  In my case, lately, it has been abrupt and when I least have the time.  lol   Love you SIL!  And, thanks.

Earth Angel, my sweet angel, I liked all those titles, they all brought joy!  Thanks you, dear Linda for your gift of joy this morning!  KBHBLY, jo

miscellanea - C, poetic spill, well yes spill is the word for it...you flatter me, sis!  Love you, sweetie.   ....jo

Barry, thank you for your sweet words this morning; now your remark has got me curious.  I only know it had to come out.  You'll have to explain that to me, okay? Please, I'm curious.

Helen - Thank you so much, dear angel in denial.  Don't be so hard on yourself, sweet lady.  We all have our moments of flight.     .....jo

Sometimes to put the words to paper, it tears at one.  Sometimes it spills and pours onto page.  This write poses some interesting food for thought, jo.  Enjoyed.

(big angel hugs) Oh Jo, ever since I was a little boy growing up in heartache, sacrifice is something that I have become ever too acquainted with, and finally I have understood more than just parting to it, how there's beauty in it, that we unfold the wings of our heart like butterflies, breaking out of our cocoons to only appreciate that we're given to fly! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, this made me tear as I can relate to it so much, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Jo, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

But that muse makes you sit up and take notice, and some things just have to wait.

Those angels do like to whisper and pester us in the middle of the night, don't they? Letting go is a wonderul gift to ourselves
and sacrafice is what we give to others.

Thanks for this,

This was just beautiful. I'm glad your muse is urging you to write, no matter what time it is.  This sacrifice set you free; and your freedom flowed from your pen like a river of light. Thanks for opening my eyes.

I haven't written for a while now, since Open Poetry 10 or 12.  My muse has abandon me.  I often stop by to read many of these amazing poets works, but rarely comment.
I just had to comment on this one.

Thanks again.

iliana...You have written your heart with this poem, now just fly like a dove so free. I know what you mean about just having to get the words out. Once I woke up at 1:30 in the morning and grabbed paper & pen and started writing. I finished it about 20 minutes later and slept like a rock the rest of the night...Paul

This is such an honest yarn I'm not sure what to say about it.  I haven't read a great deal of your work yet but from what little I have -- this is better.  Letting your stream of consciousness roll out is usually good for writing and you've pulled it off here.  It's good and interesting and entertaining as well.  What more could we want?

It is always a joy to hear your thoughts.
We do wonder why sometimes we are driven to get something on paper and sometimes we stare at a blank page for hours.  I've not figured it out.
Well done!  KJ
