finding home

she left that small town, her life
packed in a cardboard box
shoved in the trunk
of an ‘89 Caviler
and dreamed of stardom

free
the streets of East LA
crowded
against her dingy second floor apartment
where she rehearsed the art
of living on her own
while trying to make a living
waiting tables

photo shoots could
not replace
the loneliness
she felt each time
her eyes crossed
the time worn photos
of summer picnics with a certain old beau
whom she’d assured herself
was building a home for two
near the big pines
instead of pining for her

she practiced her rhythm
each day
while dancing around
the dreams she’d set in motion
only to watch them
collapse before her eyes

she’d given up
farms for fame
corn for color
gardens for glitz
pastures for principles
skies for skyscrapers
and sacrificed
love for limelight

she’d given up

until one night
a phone call in soft spoken words
from a familiar voice
finally took her home

Ruth, I felt this one. It was very touching.
There are many that this happens to....
maybe not in the same way, but searching for dreams.
Very good writing.

Ethel
