A chalice filled beside a throne of gold
in wait the warrior king, the trumpets blare.
Beside his throne his queen was quietly poised
as braided locks held back her flaxen hair.

This bearded man of steel blue wide swept eyes
her mate in love and life and liberty.
Soft of word in speech or intimate times.
Revered by all the realm an eye can see.

A gleaming sword and shield of plated bronze
beside the throne for friend and foe to view.
A helmet plumed and made to fit a king
with colors bright of red and bluish hues.

Knights of the table before the castle reach
stand tall to thwart away an arrows flight.
For there were men who wished to wear his crown
in stealth they moved upon a moonless night.
Without a smile to wipe away a frown.

By boat they came, their oars silently greased
a ripple nigh did wake the sleeping moat.
Poised to slay with a dagger quickly thrown
to find soft flesh of a silent knight’s throat.

But high above from a window out of view
two lovers saw their ships of death row by
and ran to sound the alarm to wake the guards.
As boiling oils fell from the ramparts high
and curdling screams told of a plan now foiled.

The night now still as moonlight cleaved the clouds
and trumpets sounded in hail of a king.
Two boats now drifting aimlessly away
as steely blue eyes wiped oil from his ring.

Very Barry...I could never think of the theme, nor write this remarkable way.  Like a glimpse from long ago, you row your words so well!

Wonderful, dearest Sir.  You do write the period well.  As I read, I also viewed the events.  You know you hold my deepest admiration
