I like to graze in pastures,
My long tail switches flies.
My back is broad and bony,
And I grow to quite a size.

I'm in the bovine family,
Grass cuds I like to chew.
My eyes are big and beautiful,
And the word I say is, "Moo".

I live in a barn, on a dairy farm,
And that barn is crimson red.
My udders can be, a sight to see,
And I've got a great big head.

~ * ~

Hello, my name is Elsie.
I'm a light-brown Jersey cow.
My milk is rich and creamy
And it makes the cats meow.

yup, cute is the word. i actually pictured sharp-eyed cats eyeing greedily at the cow's udders and chuckled a bit.

lily jo ~

Our old homestead was built over 200 years ago by my great (several greats!) grandparents who were United Empire Loyalists. My spinster great aunt (right out of an olde novel!) stayed on the farm her whole life. She had a few dairy cows and I tried to ride one ~ that's how I know that their backs are broad and bony! lol

That house was HUGE!!! The manor even had a name and was written of in history books. It even had a wing for the servants quarters.

It had a pipe organ, a grand piano and a mini grand. The dining room table sat 22 people ~ before added extentions! There was even a hidden spiral staircase! All the bedrooms had 4-poster beds, stained-glass windows, and a stone-fireplace! There was a well for pumping water ~ lots of memories there!

Sorry for rambling on, but the memories came flooding back when you mentioned that you thought I must have been raised on a farm! No, but I sure spent lots of time there. I also spent lots of time at my uncle's ranch where he raised Arabian horses. That is where I learned all about gelding which I mentioned in one of my replies to a poem of Kacy's. No, I wasn't born on a farm, but as I've said, "I sure spent lots of time" on them! lol

As "they" say,
"You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl!" ~ and thank goodness for that!

you ramble as much as you like, it's nice to hear stories of that wonderful farm life.  I to, had the marvelous opportunity of knowing cows, and a love for horses always kept me on the farm.

I have a story you might like.  We had jerseys and those brown cows, I forget what kind they were.  Anyway, it was time for the babies to arrive.  One I called Brown eyes, her calf was stillborn.  Another cow who was a nice cow, but a bad mother, abondoned her calf the moment he was born.  I picked up the calf in my coat, (heavy lil sucker!) and walked with him over to Brown Eyes...put him down on the ground next to her, and low and behold, she allowed him to feed.
Linda, that was one of the bestest moments of my life...hehehehehe, yeah I know, it doesn't take much...hehehe....and your right, you can't take the country outa the gal!  Love ya, and thanks a bunch for the fond memories...there's nothing like the simple life...a few roosters waking you, cows mooing, horses off in the pasture grazing...what else is there?

Have a great day!

Love this Linda!
It takes me back to my childhood and going to the Western Fair in London.
There I had to always go and see Elsie the Borden cow....LOL.
Very much enjoyed the memories.

Yes! I do remember Elsie the Borden cow! I don't recall whether she was a Jersey cow or not ~ but she sure was pretty! lol

So often your poetry stirs up memories of my own ~ it pleases me that I was able to do that for you as well!

(smiles) Yay! Oh Linda, it made me smile to get to read more about your history, sweet friend, that would be a quite wonderful place to grow up in! (kiss on cheek) I was raised a lot in the south on grandma and grandpa's land, and they have a neighbor named Clarence who loves raising all kinds of horses and llamas! (does happy dance) Yay, I love this, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Not only was the poem charming, but the comments you left behind only added to the enchantment of your haunts...hidden spiral staircases...wow...now you're going to tell me you're Nancy Drew in disguise...

That was great that you were exposed to animals as well while you were growing up!
My memories serve me well and much of my poetry comes from those experiences ~ peacefulness, nature, animals, honest work, values, ~ and good home-cooking! lol

Not only did my life read like a Nancy Drew novel ~ I was a Nancy Drew clone! I even grew up in a family of high-profile detectives ~ and I was an amature one myself!

My life has been fascinating! ~ frightening at times, but exhillarating! I doubt that I have had a boring day in my life! There is always something going on ~ and out of the ordinary at that! lol

This was so much fun, dear Linda! And when I read Barry's comment my smile transformed into a hearty laughter ...
Well, I had an uncle back home in Switzerland who had a big farm and there I had some close encounters with the cows ...  but I don't know what either the cows or I lacked .... the relationship would not develop into something discreet ... no confidence shared!
There is something "imponderable" in the cow's nature ... me thinks.

Yes, the cow is Swiss, but of a younger generation .... haha.
Love and big hugs.

Margherita ~

I love the pic! Thanks for posting it! I know what you are talking about when it comes to communicating with those bovine creatures! It takes patience and learning to say "Moo" just the right way so that they are not offended! Horses tend to be much friendlier ~ and they even take you for rides on their backs! ~ and they aren't as bony as the backside of a cow! lol

Thank you for adding your warmth and special touch to my post!

Love & Hugs,
Linda
